Your House is Your Haven: Don't Neglect the Interior

How To Get Your Partner On Board With Your Feng Shui Ideas

by Cherly King

For some people, furnishing and decorating a home is an intentional process. Every piece of furniture works together to create the optimum living space that leaves you feeling at ease, energized, and safe. If you are one of these people, then it is likely you follow several feng shui practices in your decorated. What happens when you move in with someone who does not believe in the importance of feng shui or intentional decorating? Here are several ways to get your unbelieving partner on board with your feng shui ideas by emphasizing their practical aspects when you decorate your living room.

Emphasize the Physical Safety Aspect of Poison Darts and Overhead Shelving

Your partner wants a blocky entertainment center that cuts into the center of your living room. You immediately see the corner of the center as a poison dart, which cuts the sofa in half. Unfortunately, the second you say it is a poison dart, your significant other rolls their eyes and stops listening. Instead of talking about how the corner influences the energy of the room, you can point out that it will be easy to hit your shin on the entertainment center and will be a hazard for your future children.

Similarly, instead of saying how shelves over the sofa feel oppressive, mention they are a safety hazard if the bolts were to suffer a malfunction or there was an earthquake in your area. While your partner may not believe in protecting your energy, he or she cannot argue when it comes to physical safety.

Point Out the Psychological Benefits of Your Furniture Choices

When you move in together, you significant other may think buying a new living room furniture set is unnecessary since you already have two. If he or she insists on just merging your two conflicting sets of furniture, you can point out the psychological importance of having an inviting living room. For instance, a recent study showed that people find rounded furniture more inviting than square furniture. Also, things such as symmetry, color, and function has been shown to influence behaviors an emotions.

A few new pieces of furniture, like the primary sofa or entertainment center, can help to integrate the furniture you both have. However, if there are irreconcilable differences in your decorating choices you may need to purchase new furniture that represents both of you. Keep in mind that the most important aspect of feng shui is creating an environment that everyone in the home is comfortable in, so you may have to compromise on some aesthetic decisions.

Emphasize the Health Benefits of Your Choices

Feng shui emphasizes the flow of light and air within the home. For this reason, you may be tempted to add a decorative water fountain or a Himalayan salt lamp to your living room. If your partner resists these objects, focus on their physical health benefits rather than their spiritual benefits. Both of these items add negative ions to the air in your living room, which have been shown to decrease depression and increase your daytime energy levels.

Plants, which you may want to add to attract wealth to your life, are a great way to add extra oxygen to your home which can decrease healing time when you are sick and improve your overall mood.

Although feng shui is based in ancient spiritual beliefs, many of its basic principles are supported by modern science. By concentrating on the physical, psychological and health benefits of appropriate furniture, you can create a feng shui compliant home that both you and your partner feel comfortable in without engaging in constant theological debates with your partner.
